Shakopee City Council
January 22, 2019

FROM:Micah Heckman, Project Engineer
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
School speed zone adjacent to the Shakopee East Middle School along 11th Avenue.
Policy/Action Requested:

Approve the establishment of a school speed zone adjacent to the middle school property along 11th Avenue from Marschall Road to the east school property line.

Recommendation:
Approval of the school speed zone.
Discussion:

The city's Traffic Safety Committee recently reviewed establishing a school speed zone on 11th Avenue, east of Marschall Road, as part of a city/school initiative to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. There is currently a school speed zone along Marschall Road (County Road 17) along the west side of the school.

11th Avenue borders Shakopee East Middle School on the north side. The current speed limit is 30 miles per hour.

It is expected that establishing a school speed zone along this segment of 11th Avenue will improve traffic safety in the area. The school speed zone would be established in accordance with state traffic guidelines and would be posted at 20 miles per hour.

Budget Impact:
The traffic control signs will be manufactured and installed by city staff, funded out of the Street Maintenance operating budget (approximately $300).
