In July 2019 the City of Shakopee applied for a MN Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant through the MN Historical Society, asking for $336,406.00. The grant requested funding to help eliminate further degradation of a historical and sensitive area caused by stormwater overflow. Specifically,  flooding is occurring on Dakota burial mounds (Steele Mounds (21SC24)). The project will reroute stormwater to an area which will prevent further degradation of this area. Funding from the grant will be used on construction costs and archeological preservation of the affected area.
