Shakopee City Council
March 21, 2017

FROM:Jamie Polley
TO:Mayor and City Council
Subject:
Shakopee Youth Tennis Association Presentation
Policy/Action Requested:
Consider the request as presented by the Shakopee Youth Tennis Association (STA).
Recommendation:
To keep Shutrop Park open for any and all possible developments.
Discussion:

On October 21, 2014 the city approved a term sheet with the STA allowing the Association to utilize approximately six acres of Shutrop Park to construct an indoor tennis facility. The term sheet was executed on March 12, 2015 and was only intended to set forth the general parameters of what was expected of the STA before they began fundraising. There was a clear understanding of both parties that the STA would have 18-24 months to fundraise for the project.

It has been 24 months, an update on the Shakopee Tennis and Education Center will be presented to the City Council by Tom Arnfelt, President of STA and John Vande Castle, Architect with the Cuningham Group. The presentation will:

  1. Cover what has been done since the original agreement was signed.
  • Completed the market assessment with Convergent Consulting Group.
  • Strengthened the Board of Directors
  • Hired an outside consulting firm (Hansen and Henley) which is a local firm to assist in developing the brochure.

     2. Describe the main objective; to secure a Lead Donor for the project

     3. Provide a quick summary of the facility.

     4. Request the City Council to grant STA a one year extension on the use of Shutrop Park.

Budget Impact:
There is no impact to the Park Reserve Fund or General Budget at this time.
