Discussion:
On June 10th the Shakopee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted unanimously to support the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association's proposal to donate all necessary to convert the unused 2nd floor conference room at the ice arena into a dryland training space for Shakopee's hockey players (Shakopee High School Teams and the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association Teams).
BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: Project partnership provides citizens a new amenity
ISSUE: Shakopee Parks and Recreation partnership project with Shakopee Youth Hockey Association
Discussion: Shakopee Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) approached Shakopee Parks and Recreation on project partnership opportunity to activate vacant Ice Arena space by converting vacant 2nd floor room into state-of-the-art dryland training area.
Customers reported that the Ice Arena’s 2nd floor conference room was hard to find and didn’t have easy access to restrooms (too far away), so they consistently passed on opportunities to rent the space for meetings and parties. On April 2nd, Shakopee City Council’s approval of the turf sale provided the proceeds needed for the project they approved to create an easy to access space for meeting and party rentals. Beginning June 27th, construction begins to convert a corner of the Ice Arena’s south-west lobby into that easy to access conference and party room and it should be available for rental customers by mid-July.
Materials from that former 2nd floor conference room (mirrors, carpet, cabinets) have been repurposed to convert the former turf storage room into a quality figure skating warmup and fitness overflow room. The electrical and plumbing lines hide behind low cost pipe and draping ($750) that will be used in figure skating programming for showcases and competitions. Relocated storage lockers provide athletes opportunities to secure belongings and relocated benches provide seating to transition from street shoes to sport.
Shakopee’s Youth Hockey Association proposes they cover all costs associated with converting the former 2nd floor conference room into a dryland training space for shooting, passing and other skills development. The Ice Arena has a premier dryland space rented by E-Train that includes a synthetic mini-ice rink. SYHA and Shakopee High School hockey players/teams keep a booked schedule training with E-Train on this synthetic ice. The proposed conversion
of the vacant space would have shooting tile surface (no ice skates) to focus on different individual and team skills development.
SYHA has conducted market research and reviewed potential bids for the project. SYHA requests endorsement from the Shakopee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to move the request to Shakopee City Council for approval to proceed on project with Becker Arena Products providing delivery and installation with no projected city cost and SYHA cost of $39,812.90.
New dryland training area would be added to SYHA agreement with SYHA assuming responsibility for scheduling and routine maintenance of the space. Ice arena will continue to maintain cameras in the space to ensure no damage to the facility.
