Discussion:
The Greenstep Cities program is designed and managed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was founded in 2009. The program is tailored for Minnesota cities and is centered around achieving sustainability and increasing quality of life for residents and achieving energy-driven cost savings for local governments. There are 5 steps to the program utilizing up to 29 optional best practices. The main areas of focus are cost saving and energy use reduction measures and increasing community engagement and involvement. Achieving the first step is this resolution, which is to officially become a GreenStep city. Further steps require overt city action toward increased sustainability practices in five broad categories: buildings and lighting; transportation; land use; environmental management; and economic and community development. The MnPCA assists cities in achieving these steps while providing recognition for accomplishments.
The program is free, voluntary, non-obligated, and the city may withdraw at any time without consequence.
Currently there are 127 other cities in Minnesota which have completed at least the first step with 15 cities having already completed all five steps through various city policies and sustainability practices.
