Shakopee City Council
AugustĀ 20, 2019

FROM:Micah Heckman, Project Engineer
TO:Mayor & Council Members
Subject:
School speed zone adjacent to Living Hope Lutheran School along Horizon Drive.
Policy/Action Requested:

Approve the establishment of a school speed zone adjacent to the school property along Horizon Drive from County Road 18 (Crest Avenue) to Muhlenhardt Road.

Recommendation:
Approval of the school speed zone.
Discussion:

The city's Traffic Safety Committee recently reviewed establishing a school speed zone along the north side of the  school on Horizon Drive as part of a city/county/school initiative to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety.

Horizon Drive borders Living Hope Lutheran School on the north side. The current speed limit is 30 miles per hour along the entire school frontage.

The school speed zone would be established in accordance with state traffic guidelines and would be posted at 20 miles per hour.

Budget Impact:
The traffic control signs will be manufactured and installed by city staff, funded out of the Street Maintenance operating budget (approximately $750).
