Shakopee City Council
September 17, 2019

FROM:Kyle Sobota, Senior Planner
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
Proposed Name Change of 128th Street West to Astoria Drive
Policy/Action Requested:
Adopt Ordinance No. O2019-012, a resolution approving the street name Change of 128th Street West  to Astoria Drive for the segment of roadway between County Highway 15 (Marystown Road) and the plat Windermere South 2nd Addition.
Recommendation:
Adopt the ordinance as presented.
Discussion:

The City of Shakopee has proposed a street name change request for the 930' segment of 128th Street West that is west of Marystown Road / County Road 15.

The purpose of the name change is to have consistency with the numbered street naming convention in the City of Shakopee and avoid confusion of which areas are within Jackson Township or the City of Shakopee. Numbered East-West oriented residential streets in Shakopee are one or two digit numbers with the suffix "Avenue". The subdivision Windermere South 2nd Addition would have multiple homes on 128th Street West.

Staff has already discussed the proposed name change with DR Horton and DR Horton proposed the name Astoria Drive for the segment of roadway in their plat that connects to the existing 128th Street. Staff has discussed the proposed change with Emergency Services personnel and they recommend changing the name of 128th Street to avoid confusion for EMS calls.

There are only two properties adjacent to this segment of roadway (Mt Olive Church and Friendship Church). Both churches addressed on Marystown Road, so no properties would have their addresses changed as a result of a name change. The name 128th Street east of Marystown Road would remain as 128th Street, as that area is not in the City of Shakopee.

Budget Impact:

Two street signs will need to be replaced if the change is adopted.
