Shakopee City Council
May 19, 2020

FROM:Ryan Halverson, Assistant City Engineer
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
Unbridled Avenue Street Lighting
Policy/Action Requested:
Authorize the construction and purchase of a street lighting system for the Unbridled Avenue Project CIF-20-014, in the amount of $169,999.61 by the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission.
Recommendation:
Authorize the purchase.
Discussion:

The 2020 Unbridled Avenue Project (CIF-20-014) was recently awarded on April 21, 2020, and the project is underway. As part of this project, a street lighting system will be constructed. However, Shakopee Public Utilities Commission (SPUC) typically constructs the lighting system separately from the contractor's work. The lighting systems in Shakopee are typical sole-sourced to SPUC as the lighting systems are integrated into and operated by SPUC.  The proposed street lighting system plans for Unbridled Avenue are shown in the attached plan sheets. This system and costs are consistent with the recently constructed lighting system along Shenandoah Drive.

The estimated cost to install the street lighting system along Unbridled Avenue is $169,999.61 (see attached proposal). Shakopee Public Utilities Commission has the capacity and experience for the street light construction. They are prepared to begin work as needed with substantial completion of the street lighting system by November 2020.

Budget Impact:

The project is budgeted in the 2020 Capital Improvement Plan as part of the Canterbury Commons Development Tax Increment Funding. The street lighting estimated cost of $169,999.61 falls within the projects contingency budget amount of $500,000.
