FROM: Jamie Polley
TO:Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
Subject:
Pathways to History Presentation
Policy/Action Requested:
Provide the Shakopee Heritage Society with feedback on their presentation of the history park area within Memorial Park.
Recommendation:
Support the efforts of the Shakopee Heritage Society to bring Shakopee's history to Memorial Park for the community to enjoy.
Discussion:

In 2011 the City Council extended Memorial Park to include land south of 101, at the request of the Shakopee Heritage Society. Since then the area has been improved to include a connection of Sarazin St to Memorial park via a trail under 101, landscaping, retaining walls and an enhanced storm water retention area.

The Heritage Society's intention for this area is inform the public of the historic significance of this area. They propose to construct Kiosks with historical information, picnic tables, benches, etc. The specific information that they want to display has been a work in progress.

Budget Impact:
The City's Parks Department currently maintains this park area as part of their general fund maintenance budget. Maintenance at this time consists of mowing and minimal garbage pickup. The Shakopee Heritage Society is seeking donations and sponsorships to purchase the kiosks and other amenities.
