National Fitness Campaign
Policy/Action Requested:
Recommend the National Fitness Campaign to the City Council for inclusion into the 2018 Park Reserve Capital Improvement Plan.
Recommendation:
Approve the requested action.
Discussion:

The National Fitness Campaign is working to install 100 fitness courts in 2018 to provide free fitness to the communities. The campaign began in the 1980's and has evolved to a modern, durable, effective fitness court. The opportunity to install a fitness court such as this would be a benefit to the citizens of Shakopee and the surrounding communities. A possible partner on this initiative is St. Francis Regional Medical Center. A meeting with them is set for Monday, June 12th. The Scott County Healthcare Initiative Program (SHIP) Coordinators are also interested in assisting the city find partners or raise money for this initiative.

The National Fitness Campaign requests that the fitness court be placed in high visibility, high fitness traffic area such as near trails, parks, etc. A specific site has not yet been determined. A few ideas include the Community Center Campus or Westminster Park.

Budget Impact:
The total cost of the National Fitness Campaign is $100,000. A grant of $10,000 will be awarded to the first 100 cities who agree to install the fitness court. The remaining $90,000 would be funded from the Park Reserve, partnerships and sponsorships/fundraising.
