Subject:
Park Asset Geographic Information System (GIS) Program
Policy/Action Requested:
Provide feedback on the GIS program demonstration, usability and benefit.
Recommendation:
Complete the action requested.
Discussion:
The city has a two Capital Improvement Programs (CIP) that include park projects; Park Reserve Fund and Park Asset Fund. The CIP's are updated each year and typically forecast out five years. The City Council has requested that we begin forecasting out 10-20 years. In order to better forecast the park needs, the program used to track our park assets needs to be enhanced.

The city has a great GIS system already in place and other cities have begun utilizing their GIS systems to track their park assets. The GIS Coordinator has met with another city to review their system and agrees that utilizing our GIS program is a beneficial tool to tracking the park assets. A sample of what can be done in GIS has been created and will be demonstrated for the board. The program has to ability to include as much or as little information as we want it to include. For example, each light fixture in the parks could include the manufacturer, type, year installed, cost and picture.

A demonstration will also be given of a GIS program developed for the city website that allows users to find information and location of city facilities including the park facilities.

Budget Impact:
Staff time required to set up the GIS database has an impact on the personnel portion of the budget. It is anticipated that this database and the ability to track the park assets better and more efficiently will save staff time in the future.
