Discussion:
Background
As part of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan the need for better signage and wayfinding along City Trails was identified by residents. This included nodes for respite with benches and garbage cans, improved crossings and trail connections and better wayfinding for navigation throughout the trail system. These concepts and ideas (pages 220-229 of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan) are included as an attachment.
Proposal for Trail Wayfinding and Signage
City Staff have received a proposal from Confluence to develop a City-wide signage and amenities standards manual for trails.
Standard amenities will be selected for the City to use throughout the system to provide a cohesive brand and aesthetic. Amenities to include:
- Signage
- Benches
- Trash/ recycling receptacles
- Drinking fountains
- Lighting standards – park and trail focused
- Seating/ table options
The proposal also includes plans for the new branding for the Vierling Greenway Trail (formerly known as the Upper Valley Drainage Way Trail) to reflect a more vegetated and welcoming recreation trail for residents. The proposal includes the 100% design of a trailhead at the Vierling Greenway in Lion's park, adjacent to the fire station and 30% Schematic level plans for the entirety of the Vierling Greenway.
Next Steps
If the City Council approves the proposal, City Staff will begin work with Confluence immediately. The plans for overall signage and the trailhead would be complete in early fall and presented back to the City Council.
