Shakopee City Council
July 7, 2020

FROM:Lori J. Hensen, City Clerk
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
Ratify the resolution designating the polling locations for the 2020 election year.
Policy/Action Requested:
Approve Resolution 2020-082 which ratifies administrative certification of polling locations for precinct 2 and absentee voting.
Recommendation:
Approve the requested action above.
Discussion:

Minnesota Statute 204B.16, subd. 1 requires all municipalities to designate polling places for each precinct by December 31 of each year for the next calendar year in the event an election is held.

The resolution designating polling locations needed to be updated because the Shakopee School District is closing Central Elementary School which is Precinct 2 of our current polling locations.

In working with the school we are moving Precinct 2 to Pearson Elementary located at 917 Dakota Street South for the 2020 election year.

An absentee voting location must also be designated. Scott County has delegated to the City of Shakopee the responsibility of administering regular absentee ballots for all elections going forward. Absentee voting will be conducted 46 days prior to each election at Shakopee City Hall.

Scott County required that we certify the polling locations no later than July 1, 2020. Due to timing - the polling locations have been administratively certified - the council is asked to ratify the administrative decision made necessary due to timing.
