Discussion:
Background
As part of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan it was envisioned that the trail system along the Upper Valley Drainageway would be rebranded as the Vierling Greenway, complete with new signage identifying routes, adding amenities and added a trailhead in Lion's Park, near Fire Station 2.
Staff, and consultants from Confluence Design have worked to select two signage packages which would be used for this project, as well as a larger effort to brand other trail loops throughout the city.
Concepts
The two concepts, which are included with this item as an attachment, include a variety of types of sign to be used throughout a trail system as well as options for park signs, which would be replaced as parks are redeveloped. Signs have been designed for trailheads, both a vertical and horizontal style, directional signs which would include maps and indicate landmarks or additional amenities, trail markers to indicate to a pedestrian that they are on the right trail path - these are especially important where gaps in the trail network exist, and mileage markers to note distance. Also attached to this report is a map of the Vierling Greenway route, and where each signage type could be located.
The first design is a modern design which leans heavily on the City of Shakopee branding. The materials used in this design would are concrete, metal and steel. The second design is a more traditional design, which is made of composite wood, metal and steel.
Next Steps
Tonight, staff would like the PRAB's feedback on the two signage concepts. The design will also be brought to the City Council at their meeting on December 15, 2020. Following this, staff will make any changes, finalize the design and bring the design back to the PRAB and the City Council in late January. Staff anticipates construction and completion in Spring 2021.
