Discussion:

Shakopee and New Prague will be cohosting the 2018 State Amateur Baseball Tournament. The last time Shakopee was a cohost of the tournament was in 2008. Prior to hosting the State Amateur Baseball tournament a number of maintenance items and new improvements are completed to Joe Schleper Stadium. The City Council recently approved a painting contract to repaint a majority of the stadium. The Parks Department has also replaced fencing around the batting cage, updated the backstop fence and netting, removed an old batting cage and planted additional trees.

The stadium committee is requesting the authorization to construct elevated seating along the 1st base line similar to the elevated bleacher seating the committee constructed prior to the 2008 state tournament. Scope of Project Residential Improvement Contractors of Minnesota, Inc. (RIC, Inc.) will furnish and erect a viewing deck to the west of the stadium seating. (Attachment #1). The total project cost is $10,859.11. The labor is being donated by RIC, Inc. The estimated value of the project (materials and labor) is $14,354.11.  The project would consist of the following: · Excavation and grading · Treated lumber structure · Maintenance free (Trex Transcend composite decking) floor boards, seat boards and stair treads · Pipe railing that is a combination of aluminum and composite materials. RIC, Inc. estimates about one week to complete the project.

Budget Impact:
The Tournament Committee will pay the entire cost of the project with the ad sales already sold for the tournament, approximately $15,000. There will be no cost to the city to complete the project. If the city accepts the donation the seating will be placed within park asset plan for planned future maintenance.

The Tournament Committee would be utilizing volunteer labor to help construct portions of the project to help keep the costs lower. RIC, Inc. will supervise the work and do all of the structural construction. Volunteer workers would follow the same guidelines that are taken when a community playground is constructed.
