Discussion:
The city has applied for transportation funding for a pedestrian bridge over 169 from the Southbridge development to Quarry Lake Park area. The pedestrian bridge has not scored high for the funding because the area was not listed as a regional trail or bicycle transportation corridor. A current bicycle transportation corridor does exist in Shakopee along Stagecoach Road. Staff does not feel this is the best location for a transportation corridor with the railroad switching yard within the corridor.
Staff has recently met with Scott County and Metropolitan Council staff to discuss the concerns with Stagecoach Road and present the option of a corridor further to the West connecting Southbridge to Quarry Lake Park. Representatives from both entities were very receptive to a corridor in this area. The Metropolitan Council is beginning to update their 2040 Transportation Policy Plan and is willing to present an additional corridor within the Regional Bicycle Transportation Network (RBTN). Attached is the proposed changes to the RBTN within Scott County that will be presented to the Metropolitan Council Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC).
If the TAC accepts the proposed changes the city will include these corridors within the 2040 Comprehensive Plan update.
