Shakopee City Council
AprilĀ 20, 2021

FROM:Ryan Halverson, Assistant City Engineer
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
Application to 2021 CenterPoint Energy Community Safety Grant
Policy/Action Requested:
Adopt Resolution R2021-068, the application to the 2021 CenterPoint Energy Community Safety Grant.
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution R2021-068.
Discussion:

Annually, CenterPoint Energy offers matching grants to cities served by the company through the Community Safety Grant Program. In 2021, the program will award grants up to $2,500, giving priority to applications focusing on safety equipment or safety-related projects.

Several of the city's existing radar speed signs are aging and no longer receive technical support nor updates from the manufacturer. Failure of the battery supply is also occurring. The signs are limited in function and have become obsolete. The city is applying for two (2) Traffic Logix SafePace Evolution 12FM radar speed signs, similar to the feedback signs currently installed along Eagle Creek Boulevard. The new signs are fully programmable, record traffic speed and volume data, and provide visual driver feedback with programmable messaging for drivers operating over the designated speed limit. City staff use these signs throughout the city where concerns of high speed have been reported, and they are highly effective in lowering traffic speeds while in use.

Budget Impact:
This grant requires a 50% match up to the maximum grant request of $2500. One Traffic Logix SafePace Evolution 12 FM radar speed sign costs $2,899, for a total of $5,798. Freight costs are $313. The city will cover $3,611 which will come out of the Engineering Operational budget.
