Discussion:
In 2009, the Metropolitan Airport Commission created a zoning board for Flying Cloud Airport. The purpose of the board is to review prospective zoning issues within the "safety zone" of the airport, some of which extends into northern Shakopee. For example, the board could oversee issues that would impact the height of structures that might be built at Valleyfair, or the northern part of Valley Green Industrial Park.
The board is made up of two representatives each from the Cities of Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Shakopee. The MAC also has two representatives on the board.
Joe Helkamp was one of the city's representatives on the board. He has resigned due to moving out of the city. Eric Weiss, Long-Range Planner for the city is the other member from Shakopee.
Mike Beard is a former city councilmember, former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives (where he was deeply involved in transportation issues), former member of the Minnesota Regional Transit Board, and current Chairman of the Scott County Board. Commissioner Beard is very knowledgeable about zoning issues and is a private pilot.
