Discussion:
A large space at the Shakopee Community Center has been inactive and vacant for over 2 years (since the beginning of COVID). In that same time, we regularly receive requests for rental spaces that we currently lack the capacity to meet. This project modifies one large existing inactive space, and changes it in ways that offer maximum flexibility and increased possibilities to activate the spaces in ways that can better serve the community
The project adds a permanent wall to create a space that can accommodate regular requests for a conference type meeting room for 20-25 people, and a collapsible wall allowing the larger space maximum flexibility from wide-open room for child programming or divided into two spaces to meet the demand for a 40–50-person rental or for birthday party rentals at the indoor playground.
Staff worked with three different contractors for proposals. One company dropped out unable to secure all necessary subcontractor commitments. Another appeared to offer an initially lower cost but had listed key project components as “add-ons” which increased the total project cost beyond the recommended company. Staff recommends Greystone for this project with their full-scope proposal at a total cost of $133,620.00. Staff further recommends budgeting an additional $15,000.00 as contingency in recognition of current trends impacting supply chain and labor market.
Staff request that the Mayor and City Council approve this renovation project to activate spaces at the Shakopee Community Center.
