Discussion:

The log cabin in Lions Park was first built in the late 1980’s with helpful assistance from American Legion Post #2, the Shakopee Lions Club, and many other local service organizations.  It was first called the “Shakopee Community Youth Center” and was intended to serve the recreational needs of the entire community.  In 1995, the Shakopee Community Center was built, offering greater capacity of dedicated space to better serve the recreational needs of the community.  The log cabin was eventually renamed the "Youth Building” - differentiating it from the new Community Center - and the space was offered to the community to rent for personal meetings, parties, and special events.  Since it was built, it continues to be made available at no cost for Boys and Girls Scout scheduled weekly meetings.

Rental customers are frequently confused by the name “Youth Building”, concerned that they might not be able to rent because their event doesn’t qualify as a “youth” activity.  They also frequently comment, “Why isn’t it just called – the ‘Log Cabin’?”  In addition, staff is routinely asked if alcohol is prohibited because it is a “Youth Building”?

Changing the name of the space to the “Log Cabin” alleviates unnecessary confusion generated by the current name.  It is a “Log Cabin” and embracing that fact and referring to it as the “Log Cabin” will simplify marketing strategy and help in establishing a clear brand to promote the space for future rentals.

There is no current ordinance, rule, or law that prohibits granting permission to allow alcohol to be consumed in the space contingent on paying an appropriate refundable damage deposit for beer or wine, and/or confirmation of appropriate permit approval if using a licensed liquor caterer for an event rental.

Request that the Mayor and City Council approve changing the space currently known as the “Youth Building” to henceforth be called the “Log Cabin”, and to approve the consumption of alcohol in the space contingent on payment of appropriate deposits and permits.  Changes to take effect immediately.
