FROM:Jeff Tate, Police Chief
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:

Extend Joint Powers Agreement with MN. Financial Crimes Task Force

Policy/Action Requested:
Extend Joint Powers Agreement with the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force
Recommendation:
Extend Joint Powers Agreement
Discussion:

The Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force wishes to extend the current Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) with the City of Shakopee. Council approved the current agreement in 2019 and it is set to expire in 2024. The State desires a new agreement under the same terms and conditions so every entity they partner with has the same expiration date. The new expiration date under this proposed JPA is March 30, 2027.

This is a valuable partnership for the police department when investigating and prosecuting identity theft and related financial crimes. The proposed JPA allows the city to be reimbursed for some investigator time while working these cases.

Budget Impact:
There is no cost to participate. Participation with this task force allows the city to seek some reimbursement for time investigators spend working certain cases.
