Discussion:
The Shakopee Youth Football Association has submitted an application to have 2 fields at the 17th Avenue Sports complex named to honor Mark Grommesch. Mark was a lifelong resident of Shakopee and active leader in the Shakopee Football programs until his death in 2021. He was a driving force in the success of Shakopee Youth Football, as a student player in his youth, to serving more than a decade as a coach and many years leading Shakopee Youth Football as President or Vice President of the association. His tireless efforts were instrumental in raising support and funding needed to secure the outdoor lights on the fields at the 17th Avenue Sports Complex. He helped make a difference in the lives of Shakopee student athletes through his involvement with the dollars for scholars program. The SYFA voted unanimously in favor of the proposal to name the 2 fields at the 17th Avenue Sports Complex to honor Mark Grommesch and requests the Shakopee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board favorably support the application forwarding it to the Shakopee City Council for their consideration.
The Shakopee Youth Football Associayion has been in discussions with Scheels to secure the funding necessary for a dual-sided scoreboard to be donated and installed to enhance the experience at the 17th Avenue Sports Complex and as a way to honor the memory of Mark Grommesch.
Staff request the Shakopee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board discuss the proposal and make a recommendation to the Shakopee City Council.
