Discussion:
The SHIP Grant funds projects bringing sustainable opportunities for social connectedness through healthy eating (MN Eats), physical activity (MN Moves), well-being (MN Well-Being), and reducing commercial tobacco use (MN Commercial Tobacco-Free) directly to the communities where individuals who may not have access to these opportunities are living. The City of Shakopee is applying for three Scott County Public Health's SHIP MN Grants.
The MN Moves Grant will provide swimming lessons to non-traditional swimming students who face economic and cultural barriers leading to a lack of basic, potentially lifesaving, swim skills. These programs are currently operational and funded through donations and reallocated funds. This portion of the project is estimated to cost $1,800.
The MN Eats Grant will provide replacement crops for the Edible Landscape Community Garden located in the Scenic Heights Park. It is anticipated that a portion of the perennial crops, fruit trees, and fruit shrubs planted in the 2021-2022 seasons will not survive the winter and will need to be replanted to continue providing sustainable fresh produce to our community. This portion of the project is estimated to cost $500.
The MN Well-Being Grant will provide wellness and mental health education courses to City of Shakopee employees during the 2023 funding cycle. This portion of the project is estimated to cost $1,000.
The total estimated cost of the combined projects is $3,300.
