Shakopee City Council
JuneĀ 6, 2023

FROM:Michael Kerski, Planning/Development Director
TO:Mayor and Council Members
Subject:
Removal of playground in Memorial Park.
Policy/Action Requested:
Approve contract with Midwest Playscapes to remove the Memorial Park Playground in an amount $14,450.
Recommendation:
Approve contract.
Discussion:

The Memorial Park Playground is in very bad condition and needs to be removed for safety reasons.  The city has posted a sign notifying the public that it will be removed and that the grass is also being largely replaced with native seeds in cooperation with the DNR and the Scott Soil & Water Conservation District.

Midwest Playscapes carries a natural playground brand, Duncan and Grove,  that we will be bringing back to Council with a design for Memorial Park that would be adjacent to the west shelter that will remain and would require no ground penetrations.

The city is also in the process of soliciting proposals for a National Register consultant with an archeological component as part of our recent State grant award that will work on identifying areas for the playground surface installation in cooperation with various state offices and agencies.

We are coordinating with Public Works/Parks the grass removal, removal of the current Chamber offices, restrooms, shelter for late in 2023 and a lot paving project for 2024.

The restrooms will be replaced with two portable toilets that will have a partial enclosure and roof.  The existing force main will be closed off.
